Law and the Environment

You can listen to the April 6 episode of Éco dans les Prairies in replay. Below are the links if you would like to learn more about the subjects we discussed.

Individuals and organizations are turning to the law to address climate change, and 50% of the cases are successful. There are a number of legal environmental organizations in Western Canada.

Students at the University of Saskatchewan have established the Saskatchewan Association for Environmental Law. A May 2 online panel with two Indigenous environmental lawyers will discuss the duty to consult and climate litigation.

The Environmental Law Centre in Alberta publishes reports and organizes seminars. They have recently published 6 reports on the Canadian constitution and the environment.

West Coast Environmental Law in British Columbia provides legal advice and funding to support individuals and organizations that require legal assistance to protect their communities and the environment. They organize campaigns such as Sue Big Oil and help other organizations to publish reports.

EcoJustice has 5 offices and is currently pursuing 31 legal cases, entirely funded by donations.

On a world-wide level, there is developing interest in providing nature with legal rights. It’s still uncertain how this will unfold. What are the rights of a river, for example ?
