The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating: Bedridden by illness, Elisabeth Tova Bailey is absorbed by the anatomy, hydraulic locomotion, decision-making ability, and courtship activities of a snail that takes up residence on her bedside table. “Each evening the snail awoke and with astonishing poise moved gracefully to the rim of the pot and peered over, surveying the strange country that lay ahead. Pondering its circumstance with a regal air, as if from the turret of a castle, it waved its tentacles first this way and then that, as though responding to a distant melody.”

The Miraculous from the Material by Alan Lightman explores the science underlying the wonders of the natural world, from volcanoes and waterspouts to bright-scarlet birds and spectacular sunsets. Lightman says, “I don’t believe in miracles, but I do believe in the miraculous. The miraculous abounds, and the material world and its laws are quite enough to explain it. And that too is miraculous.”
